We Had to Act: The Somalia Intervention
2002 International Workshop
Led by Mr. Chris Holmberg,
Senior Performance Development Manager, Cadence Design
Systems
Students played the roles
of representatives of the United Nations, US Democrat
and Republican parties, and two clans of Somalis. We tried
to understand the options available to those who were
trying to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Somalia in
1992, to develop strategies that might allow a successful
outcome, and to negotiate the carrying out of those strategies.
We learned about the complexities of motivation among
the interested parties, and how difficult it is to find
solutions to international problems, even when the goal
seems simple.
