FIRE IN THE FOREST: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN CONFLICT WITH THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

Fire in the Forest is a role-play simulation set in the fictional South American country of Forestal. It explores issues related to protection of the environment, the rights of indigenous peoples, debt relief for developing nations and the delicate balance between the use of natural resources, economic opportunities, and social justice.

Settlers The Indians' plan would take away our mines and cuts us off from our settlements.

The Indians already use their land as a nature preserve of sorts. Why do we need a separate tract of land for that?

An American group came in and kicked us off our land. We had no place to go.

Government We value all our citizens and are optimistic that working together we can find a solution beneficial to all.

We recognize that we have been irresponsible. We do not have the resources to make life as good as you deserve it to be.

Having the settlers' and the Indians' land right next to each other makes me nervous!

We don't even have the money to combat malaria, so we sure don't have the resources to rebuild the road around your sacred ground!

Indians The economy? We are outside the economy of the state.

Why doesn't the government protect us with the laws it passed?

Global Rescue We are mainly concerned with preserving the environment and protecting the Indians.

We want to alleviate the pain experienced by the Indians, preserve the environment, and help the settlers live a happy life.

What if we move the road so that it doesn't go through your sacred ground?
