Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden, BWV 1083 was written by J.S. Bach in the second half of the 1740s when he was in Leipzig. Using the text of Psalm 51, Bach transcribed Giovanni Pergolesi’s Stabat mater, expanding the viola part and making other adjustments to the piece to fit the German text.
