Mark A. Heckler was formally installed as 18th president of Valparaiso University during inauguration ceremonies on campus Oct. 17, 2008.
Administering the oath of office was David Hessler, chair of the Board of Directors, and presenting him with the medallion symbolic of the office of the president was President Emeritus Alan F. Harre. The program also included remarks from representatives of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the faculty. Gifts were presented to the new president by representatives of the study body, the staff and the faculty.
In his inaugural address, President Heckler described Valparaiso as a “university at the nexus” and, citing the institution’s 150-year history of innovation and leadership, said that “now, more than ever, the world needs Valpo graduates.”
He said the University is launching a comprehensive visioning process to identify opportunities to further Valparaiso’s legacy as a progressive and innovative institution. “We will dream about what it means to be a university at the nexus, not for today, but for those who will gather in this place 20 years from now,” he said. “We will delineate a set of actions that will propel us toward that future.
Delegates from institutions of higher education, academic societies and organizations from throughout the nation participated in the academic procession and music was provided by several University ensembles.
