Wireless Network Upgrade

Information Technology is in the midst of a project to upgrade the wireless network on campus. Wireless LAN (WLAN) is becoming the most common method for students to connect to the campus network. Our current system is dated in terms of performance, capacity and overall coverage. Some areas remain without a wireless signal.

In early 2011, we began the process of upgrading to pervasive 802.11n coverage across all campus buildings and select outdoor space. We chose Aruba Networks as our primary vendor for our next generation WLAN. Aruba offers a strong portfolio of products, with fully integrated security and access control, best of breed management, and support for emerging technologies like video and voice over wireless.

Some of the benefits the campus community will see as a result of the upgrade are a faster wireless network, and the ability to travel to different locations on campus without needing to re-authenticate upon entering a new building. Ultimately we will provide coverage to most spaces in all occupied campus buildings and much of our outdoor space.

As of May 8, 2012, upgrades in the following buildings have been completed in Phases I & II:

Phase III will consist of upgrade work in the following locations, currently scheduled for fiscal year 2013, though work may begin earlier than anticipated if other locations are completed ahead of schedule.

The following locations will be upgraded to the new wireless system as part of the construction process:

  • Welcome Center

The following locations are not scheduled to be upgraded to the new wireless system:

  • 807 Mound Street
  • Confucius Institute
  • Eastgate Field
  • Huegli Hall
  • Miller Hall
  • Parking garage
