INTERNSHIP SELECTION PROCESS

In their second and third years of the Program, IT Fellows begin year-long, on-campus internships working closely with faculty, staff, or IT supervisors.  Students receive training, real-world experiences and close mentoring in areas of their choice; faculty and staff members receive trained students to help them with their IT needs.

Once all Hosts are selected, IT Fellows students will obtain their internships in a manner similar to a "real-world" job search. Hosts will create advertisements to highlight the advantages of interning with them in an effort to entice students which will be posted on the IT Fellows Website. All Fellows must then contact internship hosts directly to arrange for an interview by submitting their résumé to the hosts (résumé and application are synonymous in this process).

Interviews may start immediately and are at the discretion of the host (which can be as informal as simply asking if the Fellow a yes/no question: "would you like to work for me next year?" or as formal as a sit down interview with business attire). All interviews must be conducted by the interview deadline, which is also the deadline for hosts to extend employment offers. During this period, IT Fellows students can contact as many hosts as they desire and can interview for multiple openings. Similarly, an internship host can interview and consider as many students as they desire.

All IT Fellows students are required to have a resume prepared prior to applying to any job postings. The Coordinator and Graduate Director will both help Fellows prepare for the process in any way.  Additionally, IT Fellows students are encouraged to attend Resume and Interviewing Workshops offered by the Career Center.

Once an Internship Host has interviewed a candidate whom they would like to offer a position, the Internship Host may do so by informing the student. Fellows will notify hosts directly if they will accept or decline the offer. Fellows may accept offers whenever they receive them; however, they must accept or decline all positions by the deadline for acceptances. The hosts must then immediately notify the Coordinator as to who has accepted their offers. If hosts receive acceptance before this date, they may notify the Coordinator at that time.  Students who are offered positions should respond either affirmatively or negatively to the host and to the program director.
