Many excellent free and paid apps are available for mobile devices in addition to the native apps built into the respective operating systems. Here are a few recommendations. The apps below are free unless otherwise noted.

iOS

Accessing Gmail@Valpo

The native Mail, Calendar and Contacts apps will work with your Gmail@Valpo account. In the App Store, search for “Google” and many different apps, including official Google apps as well as third party apps, will be listed. There are many apps that work with the various functions of your Gmail@Valpo account. Here are some official Google apps that you may find useful.

  • Gmail – access your email
  • Chrome – synchronizes your bookmarks among all devices where you use Google’s browser
  • Drive – access your file storage
  • Docs – view, edit, or create documents
  • Sheets – view, edit, or create spreadsheets
  • Slides – view, edit, or create presentations
  • Hangouts – real time conversations with other Google users
  • YouTube – view videos
  • Authenticator – set up two-step authentication to better protect your Google account security

Microsoft Office

Microsoft has published official apps to allow you to use software like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on your iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch). If you are using these apps without an Office 365 account, you will be able to view documents. If you want to edit or create documents, connect your  Valpo-provided Office 365 account.

Security and Privacy

In addition to setting a passcode in the built-in Settings app, there are other ways to protect your phone and privacy. You can configure privacy settings in Safari. These apps also provide security and privacy for your device.

  • Find My iPhone – if your device gets lost, you can lock or reset it from any computer or other iOS device
  • SonicWall Mobile Connect – Valpo’s official VPN system that encrypts information sent to or from your device

  • Dragon Dictation – speak into your device’s microphone and your words will be converted to text
  • Dropbox – free cloud storage accessible via mobile devices or desktop computers
  • Guardian Anytime – find a dental or vision provider on Valpo’s insurance; access your mobile ID card
  • Health Advocate – find a doctor, get help with insurance claims, estimate healthcare costs, and more
  • Health4Me – manage your Valpo-provided United Healthcare medical insurance plan and information; access your mobile ID card
  • lynda.com – access the lynda.com Online Training Library® anytime, anywhere with your device
  • Microsoft Remote Desktop – access the remote apps available on our network
  • NWI.com – local news
  • Panopto – Law School users can access course recordings
  • PS Express – edit photos on your device with this light version of PhotoShop
  • QR Reader – scan the funny-looking square (QR) codes for easy access to information
  • Rally Health – access the Rally wellness program through United Healthcare
  • Tapingo – place an order for easy pickup at Valpo’s Dining Services locations
  • Twitter – follow @ValpoAlert for campus emergency updates
  • Valpo – get information about city news, events, restaurants, merchants, service providers, and more; provided by the city’s Chamber of Commerce
  • ValpoLife.com – local news that accentuates the positive
  • Varidesk – have a standing desk? This app reminds you when to switch between sitting & standing.

Android

Access to the SonicWall VPN system at Valpo is currently not supported on Android devices.
