Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology provides a tool to establish a secure connection through an otherwise unsecure or untrusted network, as well as extend certain protected network features of the local network to remote or mobile devices. IT has implemented a system from Sonicwall.
Access to the university VPN is done via a supported web browser by pointing it to vpn.valpo.edu.
Accessing Secure Websites
For the easiest access to Valpo’s network from off-campus, connect your computer to an internet connection and then point your web browser to vpn.valpo.edu. You’ll be presented with a login page; enter your ValpoNet username and password, select “valpo” or “Valpo1″ in the Domain drop down list, then click “login.” This VPN client is configured by IT staff to allow you additional access to web-based resources at VU and encrypts your communications to Valpo.
Accessing the Full Network
To access Valpo network resources such as the network file servers and campus printers, install the NetExtender software on your computer. When logged in to vpn.valpo.edu in your web browser, click the button for “NetExtender.” After installing, you can launch NetExtender and login to the VPN system instead of the VPN website, and you will be able to access non-website resources.
The following Web browsers are supported for the SSL VPN Virtual Office portal:

- Chrome 11.0 or higher

The VPN has two methods of access, Bookmarks and NetExtender. Bookmarks are designed to provide access to individual resources (similar to browser bookmarks), while NetExtender provides full network access, as if being on the campus network. As an example, the Valpo Intra website bookmark provides a way to connect to resources like Campus Chronicle without the burden of multiple logins. The first time the NetExtender box is clicked, the application installer is launched. Once installed, it will run as a background process in either Windows or Mac OS. Therefore there is no longer a need to first login through the web page.
