Emergency Notification Procedures
for VU Police Department
May 7, 2004
Emergency computing and networking situations may arise at times when
the EIS Help Desk is not staffed. Normally, an EIS staff member on call
will respond to a page from the Help Desk phone tree (Option 6), but it
is remotely possible that the EIS staff member on call will be out of
cell phone/pager range when contact is attempted. Members of the VU
community have been advised to contact the VU Police Department in that
event.
The following are examples of emergency situations that warrant
contacting EIS staff off-hours:
1) Power failure or shutdown (actual or imminent).
2) Physical damage or threat of physical damage to equipment
(fire, storm, flooding, etc).
3) Major service outage (outage affecting a large number of
people or outage affecting critical functions; examples would
be mail server down, student file server down, VUPD network
down).
The following examples are NOT normally emergency situations:
1) Individual forgot password.
2) Individual's computer is malfunctioning.
3) Individual needs help using software (whether or not an
assignment may be due at 8:00 the next morning).
Following are the call procedures for emergency situations:
1) All problems, try Help Desk first (normal business hours or not).
If you get Voice Mail, please leave a message with as much detail
as possible (including name and phone number of person contacting
VUPD). This ensures that we will log the problem in the Help
Desk database. If the caller has already left a message with the
Help Desk, you may skip this step.
If you did not reach a human at the Help Desk, AND IF THE
SITUATION IS AN EMERGENCY, please proceed to the following lists:
2) Any problem, during normal business hours:
Office
Jeni Elkins 6141
Mike Rabe 5153
EIS Office 6763
EIS Switchboard 0
Mike Yohe 5072
3) Nights, weekends, holidays, call the Help Desk (464-5678)
and select Option 6. The on-call EIS staff member will
be paged and return your call.
4) In the unlikely event the EIS staff member on call is not
available, please contact VUPD (464-5301).
