Inter-Building Telecommunications: Underground Duct/Conduit Facilities
Requirements:
- Connection: All new conduit installations must be built out from the established campus conduit ring at the location on the ring as specified by EIS. This may require extension of the ring to a location suited for connection.
- Capacity: The standard capacity for a building feed from the conduit ring is 6 conduits.
- Size: All conduit must be 4" conduit.
- Materials: Plastic Duct: NEMA TC6 and TC9, Type EB; Fittings: NEMA TC3 match to conduit type and material; Concrete: 3000psi minimum 28-day compressive strength; Manholes: contact PPS for detailed manhole specifications, all manholes must have sump pumps and sufficient space to accomodate feed-through and branching of cabling within bend radiuses.
- Installation: Conduit must be installed in bank formation (3x3, 2x3, 3x2, or as specified by EIS for a specific project) not less than 24" below finished grade. Manholes must be placed as necessary to complete cable installation or connection points for other buildings. Conduit banks must be concrete encased with metallic wire, warning ribbon above the conduit bank, and electronic markers (see 3M 1421-XR ID Markers; marker serial#s to be recorded on as-builts). Pitch ducts to drain towards manholes. Conduits must be cleaned from debris, earth, sand, and gravel following installation. A test mandrel with a diameter no less than 1/4" less than the size of the conduit shall be drawn through the conduit to proof the bore. Conduit plugs must be installed immediately following the successful test. Any conduits that fail the test must be replaced free of cost.
- Documentation: Exact routing of conduit bank must be documented on campus utilities map and GPS coordinates for any point the conduit turns in any direction, it enters a structure, or a manhole is placed must be recorded and provided to EIS in written and data format (diskette/CDROM; text [required] and GIS and/or CAD [if available]). Depth of the bottom and the top of the conduit bank must also be provided along with any significant depth changes (+- 6").
- Approval: All Conduit installations must be approved by EIS and PPS prior to start of construction. Detailed drawings and proposed materials lists must be provided to both departments for approval. All finished installations must be accepted by both EIS and PPS. At the time of acceptance all requested documentation must be provided.
