Introduction
Intra-Building Telecommunications links constitute the backbone of telecommunications within a building. Since all voice/video/data traffic will travel through these pathways careful consideration should go into their design and implementation.
Location:
While it is often architecturally preferred to place telecommunications facilities in the corner of a building, hidden away from the public eye, horizontal distance limitations on wiring dictate a centralized location on each floor in larger facilities. Due to the large capacity of cabling interfacing in these facilities, a sizeable area on each floor should be allocated to serve this purpose.
Inter-Connects:
Telecommunications facilities MUST be stacked on top of each other floor to floor in a building. This facilitates cable routing and makes horizontal designs reusable on multiple floors. If this is not possible, careful attention has to be paid that the facilities are located in a way that the floor inter-connects do not exceed bend-radius for any cabling types used in the facility. Ample conduit space should be available to accomodate backbone cabling and no conduit should be filled more than 25% upon initial installation.
