Intra-Building (Vertical) Telecommunications: Power Requirements
Equipment Power Requirements
- Explanation:
Equipment Power constitues the outlets used to power permanent data networking and telecommunications instruments such as routers, switches, hubs, signal amplifiers, and signal splitters. Due to the sensitivity of these devices extreme care has to be taken with the power supplied to these devices.
- Requirements:
- each box of 110V outlets on a separate 20A circuit; each 208V outlet on separate circuit
- minimum of 2 quadplex outlet boxes
- Use RED outlets if central Backup Power is used
- Label Outlets clearly with Amp rating and circuit#
- Backup Power allowing a minimum equipment run-time of 60 minutes
- Verify project-specific equipment power requirements prior to installation
- Recommendations:
In larger buildings with a high port density it may be more cost effective to install a centralized backup power system and run dedicated circuits from that system to each of the wiring room.
Installation of a building generator to power network equipment as well as critical infrastructure should be considered.
Instrument Power Requirements
- Explanation:
Instrument Power constitutes standard outlets used to power impermanent testing and diagnostic instruments in the telecommunications room. It should be located close to the wiring racks in the equipment room (ideally inbetween the two racks) to make use of power while diagnosing problems as easy as possible
- Requirements:
- minimum of one instrument power box per wiring room; two are preferred.
- quadplex outlets
- minimum of 15A rating
- installed in close proximity to the wiring racks
