Ask IT: What does V.U. do with its old computer equipment?

By Mark DeMateo, Coordinator of Help Desk and Technical services

The university has several sources for disposing its old computers and electronic equipment. Equipment that may still be useful to others is sold at auction on EBay. This provides the IT department with the ability to obtain a small amount of return revenue on the initial investment.

Not-for-Profit agencies have also benefited from some of the used equipment. Organizations such as schools, churches, and mission agencies have been recipients of computers and electronic equipment. Software licensing prohibits Valpo from including the software that is installed on University computers on recycled computers. Original operating systems and minimal software are installed on the computers that organizations reuse. Any additional software needed on the donated machines is the responsibility of the organization receiving the donation.

Items that are not able to be resold or donated through these channels are picked up by an area recycling company that specializes in electronics recycling. The recycling firm then processes these items at their facility and distributes them to sources that handle resale parts, recyclable scrap, and disposable of hazardous components.
