Ask IT: What happens to my email account when I graduate?

If you are going to be graduating from VU this semester, you will want to make sure you start forwarding your email before you leave campus. As an alumni, you will be able to keep you Valpo email address for life and have it forwarded to an account of your choice. The process can easily be done on any computer with internet access, but it will take up to 12 hours to go into effect. Here are the steps for setting up an email forward:

Part 1: The Online Service Center:

  1. Go to www.valpo.edu/it/osc

  2. Sign in using ValpoNet username and password

  3. Click the "E-Mail Forwarding" link on top left-hand side

  4. Click the "Change Delivery Routing" link at the bottom

  5. Select the "Other" circle if not already

  6. Change the 'Other' box to what E-mail customer wants it forwarded to

  7. Click "Change"

Part 2: Within Groupwise:

  1. Log in to Groupwise (groupwise.valpo.edu).

  2. Click the Options link in the upper right corner of the window.

  3. In the options window, select the "Rules" tab.

  4. Change the "Type" drop-down list to Forward and click Create.

  5. Fill in the name field. Leave all the fields under "Define optional condition" blank since you want all E-mails to be forwarded.

  6. Type the address of your outside account in the "To" field below and click save. You will get an error message because you did not define optional conditions. Click OK in the error message, then click the Save button again.

  7. You will be taken back to the Options window. DO NOT simply close the window. Click the save button in this window as well or your forwarding rule may not go in to effect.

As noted above, this may take several hours to take effect. Remember to be sure to type the new address correctly.

This measure does not automatically forward existing e-mails in their inbox; this must be done manually, but you can retrieve all your old messages by configuring a POP3 client for the new address.
