WORKING WITH WEB PAGES
Serving both internal and external audiences, the VU web site provides information about the University, its mission, services, faculty and students, and events and programs. Each page has a page manager whose name appears at the bottom and who is responsible for the contents of that page. All pages should follow VU design standards and policies. Many find Dreamweaver a good tool for page creation and management. Dreamweaver is available on the Novell Application Launcher; free EIS workshops are offered on its use, as is on-line documentation.

Personal Webpages

Students, faculty and staff may have personal home pages to use for non-commercial purposes and following VU's Web Policy. Each person is allocated 10 MB of space. Faculty may request more for students via e-mail when needed for coursework.

To accommodate more design and diversity, personal home pages are hosted in separate web spaces based on your classification: student.valpo.edu; faculty.valpo.edu; staff.valpo.edu. Your LDAP username and password will give you access to your personal space.
- Your homepage URL http://[classification].valpo.edu/[username]
- Example: http://student.valpo.edu/jdoe

To add your name to the index of personal home pages or request a database, use your browser to go to the appropriate web space and click "Manage WWW Account."

Disclaimer: IT does not provide support or training for the use of PHP, MySQL, or CGI available for personal web pages. We can not guarantee that PHP feature sets will be available in the future as their availability depends on system compatibility. Use of these services is at your own risk.

Department/Office/Organization Web Pages

All VU departments, offices, and Student Senate approved organizations may request web space through the EIS Help Desk. A Page Manger is appointed to be responsible for the pages. Organization sponsors can make a request for web space. All web pages must adhear to the VU Web Policy.

Hosting Web Pages

Valparaiso University will host web pages for "loosely-connected" nonprofit professional organizations--for example, nonprofit professional organizations related to VU by virtue of a VU faculty or staff member holding a leadership role--with certain understandings.

Page Mangement

For editing convenience and security, departments and organizations have accounts on the staging server wwwstage.valpo.edu to which they send files or retrieve files via ftp. Pages are copied every two hours. (During web management, schedule may vary.) Personal home pages reside in web space student.valpo.edu, faculty.valpo.edu, and staff.valpo.edu where users have more options. Personal web pages are loaded directly to these servers without the intermediate of a staging server.

Access to web space is though ftp with your LDAP username and password. Departmental and organizational space may still have unique usernames and passwords. However, when new requests from supervisors for web access come to the Help Desk, those given access will use their LDAP usernames and passwords. The old system is being phased out.

Uploading to the Server

To upload pages, go to the Novell Application Launcher and use Rapid FTP in the E-Mail and Internet folder, or use another ftp program. Rapid ftp is a drag & drop program. The upper pane displays your local files; the lower pane displays your web space. To browse through the drives, click on the drive area and type the desired drive, then click on the desired folder to move to it and open it.

- Enter this information in Rapid FTP for personal web space based on your classification as a student, faculty or staff: Host name: [classification].valpo.edu
Username and password: LDAP username and password
To use personal web space, open the folder called vu_html and then drag files into your Home folder. Folders for other web spaces to which you have access will also appear and you may move files to and from these files also.

- Enter this information in Rapid FTP for for access to departmental or web space that still has a unique username and password:
Host name: wwwstage.valpo.edu
Username and password: unique username and password (example: writctr)

Department head or advisor should submit names of those who should have web space access via e-mail to the EIS Help Desk; also ask to have those removed who should no longer have access.

Files uploaded to personal web space upload immediately; organization and office sites upload on a two-hour cycle: www.valpo.edu on the even hours and www.intra.edu on odd hours. You may view these files between cycles by changing [www.valpo.edu] to [wwwstage.valpo.edu] on the url line and pressing enter to refresh.

Templates, Stock Graphics, and Banner Code

EIS enrichment classes will show you how to use Dreamweaver, a web page authoring tool, to create and manage single pages or your whole site. Other classes of use include html, Scanning and PhotoShop, and Forms. Visit the Page Manger's Resource Center for excellent tips as well as VU stock graphics, page templates, and banner code for header and footer required for a consistent look across www.valpo.edu.

Viewing Files After Copying to a Server

You may view your files on the staging server before they are copies to www.valpo.edu.
- Type the URL of your page on the staging server: example: http://wwwstage.valpo.edu/it/hours.html.
Personal pages are uploaded directly to their server space and will appear immediately.
