Ruth C. Vance
Professor of Law
Ruth C. Vance is the director of the legal writing program. She is involved with the three national legal writing organizations: The Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD), the Legal Writing Institute (LWI), and the American Association of Law Schools (AALS) Section on Legal Writing, Reasoning and Research. Professor Vance helped to create ALWD and was on its founding board. She is also a past chair of the AALS Section on Legal Writing, Reasoning and Research. She is a regular presenter at legal writing conferences. She has also served as vice-chair of the ABA’s Communication Skills Committee, Section of Legal Education and Admission to the Bar.
Also active in the area of alternative dispute resolution, Professor Vance is currently a member of the ABA Dispute Resolution Section’s Ethics Committee and has served as chair of the Indiana State Bar Association’s ADR Section and as editor of the state bar journal’s ADR column. She has mediated disputes under an appointment of the Indiana Department of Education. She has also served as a panelist and a moderator at the ABA’s Annual Meeting and Dispute Resolution Annual Conference.
