Incoming 1st Year Students

South Suburban Bar Association Scholarship

    Open to all students who reside or intend to practice in the South Suburbs of Cook County, Illinois. Information must be submitted before October 1st each year. Applications are available in the financial aid office at the law school.

    Award amount: $1,500 - $2,000 range

Lake County (Indiana) Bar Association's Law School Scholarship Fund

    Applicant must be a permanent resident of Lake County Indiana. Scholarships are credited toward tuition costs at an accredited law school.

    Applications are available after June 1st in the financial aid office at the law school. Deadline for submission is October 1st

ISBA Environmental Law Scholarship

    Open only to students at IU-Bloomington, IU-Indy, Notre Dame and Valparaiso University. An essay contest to foster legal scholarship addressing the practice of environmental law in Indiana; must be submitted by August 31st each year. Contact the Indiana State Bar Association for more details.

Glenn D. Peters Law School Scholarship Fund

    The scholarship is open to incoming and returning law students who live in Northern Indiana Districts. Applications are available during the summer from the financial aid office at the law school or by contacting the Bank Calumet Trust Department at 219-853-2117.

Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund Scholarship Program for Law Students

    Open to incoming 1L or 2L law students of Latin-Hispanic decent. Applications are available in the financial aid office of the law school after the first of the year. Completed applications are due in March.

ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship

    For more information on ABA scholarships go to their website at www.abanet.org. This scholarship is to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to the scholarship recipients. Rewards may be renewed each year.

Warner, Norcross & Judd, LLP Scholarship

    This scholarship is for all minority students who are accepted to law school or who are currently enrolled as 1L's or 2L's and who meet the requirements set forth on the application. Applicants must be former or current residents of Michigan OR attend a Michigan Law School. The scholarship is administered through the Grand Rapids Community Foundation. Students should submit their applications before April 15th.

This contest takes place each year and is open to all students enrolled in any US law school and to individuals who have graduated from a US law school within the last year.

    This scholarship is available to second and third year law students who are interested in practicing in Illinois. Applications become available in September and are in the financial aid office at the law school. One award is presented each year.

DRI; The Voice of the Defense Bar Scholarship

    Open to Second Year Law students who are African American, Hispanic, Asian, Pan Asian and Native American. Second year FEMALE law students are also eligible regardless of whether they are a person of color.

    Applications are available at the end of July early August each year. Information on the scholarship can be found at www.dri.org.

Roscoe Pound Institute

    Environmental Law Essay Contest - topic information, rules and guidelines can be found at www.roscoepound.org. Intent to enter forms should be turned in by January 31 each year. Essays must be submitted by March 28th each year.

    Award amount: $5,000-plus all expense paid trip to Toronto to receive his/her award.

Annual Law Student Writing Competition - Antitrust Law

    The ABA Section of the Antitrust Law sponsors an annual writing contest. The purpose of the competition is to encourage and reward student-written articles in the area of antitrust law and competition policy.

    Entry form and entries must be received by January 7th. Details about this competition are available at www.abanet.org/antitrust/writing/html.

    Award amount: $1,000-plus airfare and accommodations at the Section¹s spring meeting in Washington, DC.

Hellenic Bar Association of Illinois

    This scholarship is available to second and third year law students who are of Hellenic descent. These scholarships are based upon academic performance and demonstrable financial need. Four scholarships were awarded last year. Students must also be from Illinois or attending one of the Illinois Law schools.

    Applications are received in the financial aid office in mid summer and are due to the bar association by mid-September. Students selected to receive the scholarship will be interviewed. Those receiving the scholarship must be able to attend the Annual Scholarship Ball in October.

NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Essay Contest

    Scholarships are awarded to 3rd year law students who submit articles on the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. This article should be suitable for publication in a law review journal. Papers cannot have been previously published. Citations should conform with the Uniform System of Citation, current edition. The NRA should receive this article no later then June 1st.

    Scholarships are available to law students who are entering their third year of law school who have obtained a CPA certificate. Applicants will be evaluated upon their academic performance, leadership in the school and community and need for assistance in completing their studies. Applications are due by April 30th.

To be nominated a student must demonstrate the highest ethics and professionalism both in the classroom and the community. Contact the Dean's office if you feel you are eligible for this award. NACC - Writing Contest

    The NACC is a non-profit professional membership organization dedicated to enhancing the well-being of children by promoting excellence in the field of children's law. Essays are accepted by August 1 of each year. For this year's scholarship details go to www.NACCchildlaw.org.

    Essays will be evaluated on the importance of the topic to advancing the legal interests of children, persuasiveness, and the quality of research and writing.

Rhode Island Bar Foundation

    This scholarship is awarded to students whose home state is Rhode Island. The objective of the Bar Foundations' scholarship program is to support high legal practice standards by providing financial assistance to Rhode Island residents who show promise that they will become outstanding lawyers who will adhere to such standards and who will need such assistance in order to study law at a quality law school.

Rick Sutherland Fellowship Fund

    This scholarship is available to lawyers who have graduated from school within three years after applying for this fellowship, have significant outstanding student loans, are currently employed by a 501 c (3) or (4) organization or have accepted an offer of employment from a 501 c(3) or (4) organization. Socio-economically disadvantaged persons with demonstrated financial needs are strongly preferred.
