For more than 25 years, Valparaiso Law School had a tradition of providing a Thanksgiving Luncheon to students who had remained behind at the Law School to study rather than venturing home for Thanksgiving Break. This meal, prepared and served by Law School faculty and staff, became an annual favorite of students as well as members of the larger university community. It also became a means for the Law School to reach out to those in need in Valparaiso as the proceeds from the luncheon were always donated to a local charity.
This tradition took a one-year hiatus in 2011 due to the renovations to the Wesemann Café which took place during Thanksgiving. However, the tradition continues this year – albeit in a new format. Once again the Thanksgiving Luncheon will take place on Monday, November 19 (the first day of Thanksgiving Break) from 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., in the Wesemann Café. This year, however, the food will be prepared by Valparaiso University Dining Services, although still served by Law School faculty and staff.
Tickets for the Luncheon will be on sale at the Law Library’s circulation desk from Monday, October29 through November 19. The cost of each ticket is $8.00, with $2.00 from each ticket sale being donated to Housing Opportunities, a local ministry serving the homeless in our community. In addition to the monetary donation provided to Housing Opportunities, a food drive will be held as well. If you would like to contribute, you are invited to bring a canned or boxed good with you to the luncheon. Your donation will be appreciated by those in need among us.
