How do I get tickets for the commencement ceremony and how many may I have?
There are no tickets for the ceremony and you are not limited to the number of guests you invite.
How long is the ceremony?
About an hour to an hour and a half. Following the ceremony there is a small reception in the Harre Union Ballroom across the street from the Chapel of the Resurrection for Law School graduates and their families.
What should I do with my cap, gown, and hood after the ceremony?
Your cap, gown, and hood will be collected in room 261 (valpo room) in the Harre Union following the ceremony.
Can a relative hood me?
Only if the relative is an immediate family member and an alumnus of Valparaiso University Law School. If you would like a relative who is an alumnus to hood you, please contact the Assistant Registrar, Kristin Takish, Kristin.firstname.lastname@example.org..
Will there be a separate reception for law graduates?
YES! A champagne toast and reception in your honor will be given at the Old Town Banquet Center, 711 Calumet Avenue, Valparaiso on Friday, May 13 at 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Please RSVP on this form. For questions contact Lorrie Hodge at 219.465.7841.
Are there accommodations for handicapped at commencement?
Special seating begins one hour prior to regular seating. No Requests for special seating need to be made in advance.
Please advise an usher upon arrival of anyone in your party who is in a wheelchair or who might need special assistance.
A special area will be reserved for guests who are hearing impaired, and a sign language interpreter will sign the ceremony for those who desire that accommodation. People wishing to sit in this area should inform an usher as they enter the Chapel before Commencement begins.
Restroom facilities in the Chapel of the Resurrection are located in the front Lobby of the Chapel of the Resurrection.
Can I wear my graduate (master’s degree) apparel to the Law Commencement?
No. Protocol dictates that you wear the apparel of the highest degree received, which is LAW. Also, graduation cords are not part of the law regalia. Please do not wear them.
Can I buy my cap, gown and hood?
Unfortunately, no. The cap, gown and hood that you will wear are rentals and not available for sale. The cap and gown companies will usually sell commemorative apparel. Please contact Lorrie Hodge, Events and CLE Manager, at Lorrie.Hodge@valpo.edu or 212.465.7841 regarding contact information for the cap and gown company.
