FAQ

How do I get tickets for the commencement ceremony and how many may I have?

There are no tickets for the ceremony and you are not limited to the number of guests you invite.

How long is the ceremony?

About an hour to an hour and a half.  Following the ceremony there is a reception in the Harre Union Ballroom across the street from the Chapel of the Resurrection for Law School graduates and their families.

What should I do with my cap, gown, and hood after the ceremony?

Your cap, gown, and hood will be collected in the Valpo room (261) of the Harre Union following the ceremony.

Can a relative hood me?

Only if the relative is an alumnus of Valparaiso University Law School.  If you would like a relative who is an alumnus to hood you, please contact the Registrar, Debbie Gleason at Debbie.Gleason@valpo.edu or 219.465.7840.

Will there be a separate reception for law graduates?

YES!  A champagne toast and reception in your honor will be given at Old Town Banquet Center, 712 Calumet Ave., Valparaiso on Saturday, May 17, 5-7 p.m. Please RSVP on this form.  For questions contact Lorrie Hodge at 219.465.7829.

Are there accommodations for handicapped at commencement?

Yes and no.  You can contact the office of Integrated Marketing and Communications at IMC@valpo.edu or 219-464-6800 to reserve a spot at the end of a pew for a member of your family that is in a wheelchair plus one other person.  Also, an interpreter is provided for the deaf and an usher can lead them to the area where the interpreter will be located.  The restrooms in the Chapel of the Resurrection are not accessible by wheelchair.  People who cannot climb stairs must use the restrooms in the Harre Union across the street.

Can I wear my graduate (master’s degree) apparel to the Law Commencement?

No.  Protocol dictates that you wear the apparel of the highest degree received, which is LAW.  Also, graduation cords are not part of the law regalia.  Please do not wear them.

Can I buy my cap, gown and hood?

Unfortunately, no. The cap, gown and hood that you will wear are rentals and not available for sale. The cap and gown companies will usually sell commemorative apparel.  Please contact Lisa Todd, Assoc. Dir. of Facilities & Events, at Lisa.Todd@valpo.edu or 212.465.7893 regarding contact information for the cap and gown company.
