Three members of the Valparaiso University Law School Moot Court Society competed in the 24th Annual Domenick L. Gabrielli Family Law Moot Court Competition which was hosted by Albany Law School. The competition was Feb. 23-25 and featured 24 teams.
Third-year students Lakeisha Murdaugh, Amale Booth and Ryan Powers competed. They were coached by Kevin Warren and Margaret Johnson; Jessica Fabiszak and Jonathan Carlson assisted by judging the team’s practice rounds.
Murdaugh received the Honorable George Bundy Smith Award for Oral Advocacy and was named the “Best Oralist” out of 75 total competitors.
The case featured issues of contract law, constitutional law and family law related to child custody. The students argued on matters related to the abortion provision within a gestational surrogacy contract and its relation to public policy, as well as which party should be awarded custody of the unborn child.
