Law / MBA graduate sworn in by Attorney General

Thursday, January 10, 2008

A 2007 graduate of the Valparaiso University School of Law was sworn in as deputy attorney general for Indiana’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit on campus Jan. 11.

Nicholas Gonzales will took his oath of office from Attorney General Steve Carter at 12:15 p.m. in the School of Law’s Stride Court Room, located in Wesemann Hall, 656 S. Greenwich Ave.

“Garnering talent from Indiana law schools is important to us as we search for attorneys well prepared to represent Indiana in its legal work,” Carter said. “We are happy to welcome Nick to the attorney generals team where he will focus on investigating Medicaid fraud and abuse, and neglect against some of our state’s most vulnerable population.”

Gonzales graduated from Valparaiso with both a law degree and master of business administration.

“As a student, Nick was a genuine leader who could be counted on to get things done,” said Jay Conison, dean of the School of Law. “I am delighted that he will be representing the people of the state as a deputy attorney general.”

Gonzales received the School of Law’s 2007 American Law Institute-American Bar Association Scholarship and Leadership Award, served as advertising manager for the law student newspaper (The Forum), was a Student Bar Association Representative and served as the 2007 Steering Committee Chair. He also served as secretary for the Hispanic Law Student Association.

“I’m pleased to be joining the Attorney General’s Office and look forward to putting my skills to work for the citizens of Indiana,” Gonzales said.

The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit polices unscrupulous practices and enforces Indiana health care laws by investigating Medicaid provider fraud, misuse of Medicaid recipients’ funds and patient abuse and neglect in Medicaid facilities.
