Musical to benefit Law Clinic
Friday, February 16, 2007
Students, faculty and staff at Valparaiso University’s School of Law will take the stage March 2 for a benefit performance of the Broadway hit “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” The annual law school musical will raise money for the school’s Law Clinic, which provides free legal assistance to people unable to pay attorney fees.
Since 1965, the Valparaiso Law Clinic has offered critical legal services to thousands of residents of Northwest Indiana. In the past year, more than 700 people have received assistance in cases ranging from domestic violence to real estate and criminal matters.
The clinic’s legal services are provided by Valparaiso law students, who receive first hand legal experience by representing financially disadvantaged clients. Students work under the supervision of law school faculty.
The benefit, which is black tie optional, will begin at 6 p.m. in the VU Center for the Arts with a champagne and hors d’oeuvres reception. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. and be followed by the performance of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in the University Theatre at 8:30 p.m.
Tickets to the benefit are $100 and can be purchased by contacting Sandy Tengblad at (219) 465-7923 or by e-mail at Sandy.Tengblad@valpo.edu.
Among the approximately two dozen law students, faculty and staff performing in the musical are Bruce Berner, Seegers professor of law; Edward Gaffney, professor of law; and Ann Weitgenant, assistant director of student financial planning. JoBeth Cruz, an adjunct instructor in communication and a law student, will direct the musical for the fifth consecutive year.
Last year, the benefit featured Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me, Kate.” Previous benefits have included “Anything Goes,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Sugar Babies” and “Trial by Jury.”
