Lecture examines half-truths of tort law
Thursday, March 15, 2007
A leading scholar of tort law will present the Valparaiso University School of Law’s annual Monsanto Lecture on March 29.
John C.P. Goldberg, associate dean for research and professor of law at Vanderbilt University Law School, will discuss “Ten Half-Truths About Tort Law” at 4 p.m. in Wesemann Hall on campus.
Goldberg will discuss 10 familiar – and sometimes taken-for-granted – propositions about tort law and why they aren’t entirely true. The talk is intended to provide a compelling account of what tort law is and does and what values it serves, which in turn has implications for the adjudication of tort cases, legislative reform of tort law and the teaching of torts.
A senior editor of the Journal of Tort Law, Goldberg has written numerous scholarly articles on torts, jurisprudence and legal history and co-authored “Tort Law: Responsibilities and Redress.” He serves on the executive committee of the Association of American Law Schools’ Section on Torts and Compensation Systems and on the Members Consultative Group for the Third Restatement of Torts.
A reception will immediately follow Goldberg’s lecture.
The annual Monsanto Lecture is endowed with a gift from the Monsanto Fund, the charitable arm of Monsanto Co., and enables the VU School of Law to invite distinguished scholars and professionals to examine the theory of tort in the United States and explore avenues for its reform. The lecture is published each year in the Valparaiso Law Review.
