Law Review hosts symposium on ethics

Thursday, March 20, 2008

The Valparaiso University School of Law will host the symposium “Unethical, Says Who?: A Look at How People and Institutions Help Businesses Fulfill Their Ethical Obligations” on March 27.

The event, sponsored by the Valparaiso Law Review as part of its annual symposium lecture series, will explore who is best suited to help businesses fulfill their ethical obligations as they operate in an increasingly competitive and globalized market, as well as the ways in which regulators help curb ethical violations that have led to corporate scandals.

This year’s symposium will feature three professors with backgrounds in both business and legal ethics, including keynote speaker Thomas Shaffer, former dean of the University of Notre Dame Law School and one of the nation’s most prolific legal authors. Shaffer has written nearly 300 scholarly works on topics including estate planning, legal ethics and law and religion.

Also speaking are:

  • Regina Burch, who teaches courses in business associations, corporate finance and other topics at Capital University. She has worked as a consultant and analyst in large corporations such as Ernst & Young and Visa International, as well as practiced corporate, securities and intellectual property transactional law at firms throughout the U.S.
  • Colin Marks, who teaches commercial law, contracts and business associations is a member of the faculty at St. Mary’s University School of Law. His most recent publications have focused on the attorney client privilege in federal investigations of corporate scandals.

The Symposium will begin at 4 p.m. in Wesemann Hall (656 S. Greenwich St.) and is open to the public. Questions may directed via e-mail to Chad.Wade@valpo.edu.
