Valparaiso University's graduate division offers new Legal Studies certificate

Monday, May 5, 2008

A new Valparaiso University program will provide an introduction of the legal system for professionals working in health care, education and other industries.

Students may enroll immediately in Valparaiso’s legal studies and principles graduate certificate program, with courses to begin next fall. The 15-credit program - offered through Valparaiso’s Office of Graduate Studies - is designed for professionals who will benefit from greater familiarity with legal concepts, procedures and research but do not wish to pursue a longer-term paralegal certificate or law degree.

“There are many people who can benefit from a greater understanding of the law and how it affects their profession or workplace,” said Dr. David Rowland, dean of graduate studies and continuing education.

“Valparaiso’s new certificate program provides a convenient way to gain practical knowledge in areas such as identifying potential legal problems before they arise, responding effectively when they do and how to work effectively with lawyers.”

Those enrolled in the legal studies and principles program may select from courses in constitutional, business, communication, family and sports law, law enforcement, the judicial process, psychology and the law, negotiation and conflict resolution, and other subjects.

For more information about the program, contact the Office of Graduate Studies and Continuing Education at (219) 464-5313 or (800) 821-7685, via e-mail to graduate.studies@valpo.edu or visit the Web site valpo.edu/gce/graduate.
