Tuesday, October 2, 2007
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels answered an array of questions posed by Valparaiso University undergraduate, graduate and law students, faculty, and staff during a visit to campus on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
In the wide-ranging forum held at the Center for the Arts, members of the campus community questioned the governor for more than an hour about the state’s economic development plans, environmental concerns and all-day kindergarten, among other issues.
Gov. Daniels discussed the state’s plans for encouraging development in a industries such as the life sciences and alternative fuels that can create more well-paying jobs and noted that the Gary-Chicago International Airport holds enormous potential for giving Northwest Indiana’s economy a shot in the arm.
The governor also said the health of Indiana citizens is one of the most challenging problems faced by the state this century.
“We are not a healthy state,” said Gov. Daniels, pointing to the state’s high rates of smoking and obesity. “That diminishes the quality of life and our state’s economy because businesses are worried about health care costs.”
