The Equal Justice Alliance, EJA, is committed to Public Interest Law. We provide students with access to public interest law employment opportunities through Equal Justice Works, the national organization for public interest law, and other national and local resources. We also provide students with information about the economic realities of public interest law. Further, we provide suggestions on how to plan, economically and professionally, for a career in this diverse area of law.
EJA's primary purpose is to grant money to Valparaiso University School of Law students who perform public interest work during the summer months. Our goal is to make public interest law an affordable option for students. EJA holds several fundraisers throughout the academic year to raise money for these grants.
Past recipients of the EJA Summer Grants have worked in various areas of the law. Students have worked with domestic violence and child abuse victims, with Native American communities, with migrant workers, for the Office of the Public Guardian, Capital Defender Offices, Legal Aid and Legal Services, with the EEOC, Bureau of Alcohol, tobacco and Firearms, and have also participated in AIDS related work.
All Valparaiso University School of Law students can join EJA. There is no fee to join. All students, whether or not members of EJA, are eligible to attend conferences which are partly funded by EJA. Also, all first and second year students, again whether or not members of EJA, are able to apply for an EJA Summer Grant.
