Phi Delta Phi is an international legal fraternity established in 1869 to promote a higher standard of professional ethics. The legal fraternity is the second oldest North American legal organization in continuous existence, established after the Columbus, Ohio Bar Association and nine years before the American Bar Association. Phi Delta Phi has 122 active chapters in the Western Hemisphere with over 184,000 members making it the largest legal fraternity in existence. Additionally, five of the nine current members of the United States Supreme Court are members of Phi Delta Phi.
The Norris Inn of Phi Delta Phi at Valparaiso University School of Law focuses on community service in our pursuit of a higher standard of professional ethics. At Halloween, we sponsor a pumpkin-carving event for the children at the Boys & Girls Club of Valparaiso and at Easter, we organize an Easter egg coloring activity for the children at a local day care center. Just before Thanksgiving, Phi Delta Phi also sponsors a food drive which we call “Canned Immunity” because the students use canned goods to earn “immunity” in their classes. A student can earn “immunity” by producing more cans of food than the professor does when the professor calls on that student to answer questions in class. All of the food collected during “Canned Immunity” is donated to a local food pantry to help the less fortunate families in our community. Finally, every year Phi Delta Phi invites the Indiana Court of Appeals to visit our campus in order to hear oral arguments in cases currently on their docket. Observing oral arguments in real cases provides students with an excellent learning opportunity.
Part of the goal of law school is to not only prepare you academically for the legal challenges that you may face in your career, but also to provide you with a professional experience that will allow you to further succeed in the legal community of your choice.
