Tuesday, March 13, 2007: Mock Trial Team Wins Regional Competition, Advances to National Competition

A team of Valparaiso University law students recently won a regional contest sponsored by the American Association for Justice and qualified to compete in a national contest later this month.

Valparaiso’s School of Law is one of 16 law schools in the country to have its mock trial team selected for participation in the annual competition.

The AAJ Student Trial Advocacy Competition, taking place March 29 through April 1 in New Orleans, provides an opportunity for law students to develop and practice their trial advocacy skills during a mock civil court case dealing with product liability, personal injury, medical malpractice/negligence or related issues.

More than 200 teams participated in this year’s regional contests, with the winner of each regional event qualifying for the national competition. The mock trial teams are judged by a panel of distinguished attorneys and judges on their skills in case preparation, opening statements, use of facts, examination of witnesses and closing arguments.

Valparaiso’s team bested teams from law schools at institutions including the University of Notre Dame, Vanderbilt University, Marquette University, Indiana University, Michigan State University, and the University of North Carolina.
