Nelson Pichardo, Jordan Miller and Joel Franklin, all second-year law students, competed at the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition in Boston, MA. The team was coached by third- year law student Alex Figueroa. The event was March 8-10, and 40 law schools from around the country competed.
The team advanced to the regional semifinals after facing Western State University College of Law, Capital University Law School and University of Denver-Sturm College of Law. They lost to Texas Tech in the regional semifinal round, the team that went on to win the competition.
The topic of this competition was autism and Applied Behavior Analysis therapy. It dealt with the states’ obligation to provide coverage for ABA therapy under the EPSDT mandate of the Federal Medicaid Statute, as well as any duties of private insurers to provide coverage under the recently enacted Wellstone Act.
