A Note from the Dean

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Spring semester is coming to a close and commencement preparations are underway for our 3Ls who are about to join our prestigious alumni community.
Since last spring, when I accepted the position of Interim Dean, everyone at the law school has been engaged in a series of activities and events. The year has been busy and eventful. For example, VULS launched a new curriculum, welcomed the most diverse class in the history of the Law School, published our first Annual Review magazine, and participated in traditional Law School events such as Barrister’s Ball, Swygert Moot Court competition, and the 3L Cane Walk. 3

In early April the law school welcomed members of the ABA/AALS accreditation team and, while we have not received the official report, we are confident that the members of the team were impressed with VULS. Later in April, many Law School students, faculty and staff participated in a campus-wide “Valpo Pride” day. Our graduates continued to contribute to the Law School in many different ways during my tenure as dean and I want to say “Thank You” for everything. When I’ve asked you to help by mentoring students, assisting them in their job search, meeting with the accreditation team, and attending other functions, you have responded. We appreciate that. I also appreciate the work of Vanessa Verner who has increased our engagement with our graduates; thank you Vanessa.

In June, Andrea D. Lyon, J.D., will join the faculty as dean of the Law School. The next Alumni Forum will feature Dean Lyon and include Dean’s notes from her desk. I will continue to serve at VULS as a faculty member, teaching classes, writing and interacting with alumni when the opportunity arises. I encourage each of you to stay in touch with VULS, engage with and embrace young alumni and continue to show that we have a great alumni community. It has been a pleasure serving as Dean during the past year.

Sincerely,
Ivan Bodensteiner
Dean and Professor, Valparaiso University Law School
