Provost Mark Schwehn

Undergraduate Speaker: Mark Schwehn

A Valpo alumnus, Mark Schwehn ’67 has served as Valparaiso University’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs since 2009. He has been a member of the faculty since 1983 and served as dean of Christ College from 1990 to 2003.

Provost Schwehn is project director of the Lilly Fellows Program in Humanities and the Arts at Valpo and serves on the boards of several major institutions addressing religion, education, and American public life. During his tenure as Provost, he has overseen the development of Valpo’s academic plan, part of the University Strategic Plan, and the expansion of academic programs in all of the University’s colleges.

In 2007, he was honored with the Distinguished Teaching Award, presented annually by the Valparaiso University Alumni Association. In 2008, he was named to the Dickmeyer Professorship in Christian Higher Education. He is author of “Exiles from Eden: Religion and the Academic Vocation in America” and editor of three additional books. His articles on faith-based education have been published in numerous publications, and he is frequently invited to speak at institutions and associations throughout the United States.
