Center for Diaconal Ministry
The Center for Diaconal Ministry

Gifts to the Lutheran Deaconess Association may be designated to support up to four categories:

General Fund
The general fund supports the total ministry of the Lutheran Deaconess Association

  • Education/formation of students
  • Outreach to deaconesses in their varied ministries
  • Affirmation of lay people
  • Encouraging the church in its diaconal mission.

Restricted Funds
Donations may be restricted to a particular project or program of special interest to the donor.

Scholarships

Because there are so many people like you who care about the preparation of deaconesses for ministry in our church and world, the Lutheran Deaconess Association (LDA) has designed the DEAC Scholarship Fund to enable as many as possible to have a part in that preparation.

Scholarships are awarded to students based on need to assist them in completing their deaconess education.

How do I participate in the DEAC Scholarship program?
Your $15,000 or more gift to the Lutheran Deaconess Association will establish a DEAC Scholarship which you may name in memory or honor of someone, or to remember a special occasion or event.
What if I cannot afford to give a single gift of $15,000 or more?
The DEAC program makes it possible for

  • families
  • or groups
  • or congregations
  • or organizations

to work together to establish a $15,000 or more scholarship.

Does the gift have to be given in one year?
Donor(s) may spread remittances over as many as five years.

How many people can participate in establishing one scholarship?
Up to ten (10) giving units may combine resources to provide a named, endowed scholarship. Each of the ten units would assume responsibility for a remittance of $300 each year for five years.

Does the donor select the recipient of the scholarship award?
The donor defines in consultation with the LDA the kind of person to receive the award. The donor may recommend names to be considered. The LDA staff will make final selection of the recipient.

Do deserving students have to wait until a fund reaches its $15,000 or more goal to receive scholarships?
While contributions to the fund are accumulating, the LDA will begin awarding scholarships up to $950 each year (for as many as five years) until the fund reaches $15,000 or more. Once that level is realized, a scholarship award will be made each year from the earnings of the fund.

Can contributions be made in sums larger than the annual pledged amounts?
Yes. This is even encouraged. The sooner the fund is established, the sooner the award can be made from the fund's earnings.

Can more than $15,000 be pledged?
Yes. The larger the amount in the fund, the larger the scholarship awards. Further, additional gifts may be made to the fund even after it has reached $15,000.

Here is how the DEAC Scholarship Fund Works:

Endowment

Much has changed in our world since 1919 when the LDA began, but the need for diaconal ministry – the need for service in the name of Christ – remains as strong as ever. The Endowment Fund of the Lutheran Deaconess Association helps us respond to those needs by providing financial assistance to students preparing for ministry and assisting the LDA in developing programs for the future.

Your gift to the Endowment Fund gives you a chance to share in the future of the LDA. Your gift will be an enduring testimony of your support of diaconal ministry.

There are many different ways that you can participate:

  • cash
  • highly appreciated assets such as stock or real estate
  • life insurance
  • bequests
  • charitable gift annuities
  • qualified charitable trusts
  • charitable remainder trusts
