Spring Break Service Trips


Valparaiso University is pleased to offer seven Spring Break Service Trips for 2014. Spring Break Service Trips will take place between February 28 and March 15, 2014 with most trips taking place March 1-8. (see trip details for more information on travel dates)

The cost to participate is $350, which includes a $150 deposit due after we have announced the trip you have been selected to participate in (December 20th). This deposit is non refundable. The remaining $200 will be due by January 31, 2014. Please note that while most meals are included in this cost, some meals will need to be paid for additionally by the participant. Participants should also plan to have spending money for souvenirs and sightseeing. It is recommended to budget $500 total for this experience.

Washington, D.C.



Travel by train to our nation’s capital where you will work with the Youth Service Opportunities Project to serve the homeless population and other community projects. Time available to site see. For more information on the Youth Service Opportunities Project, visit: http://www.ysop.org/

Increase your understanding of the homeless population in the nation’s capital.

Pine Ridge, South Dakota

February 28 - March 8

Travel by van to Re-Member where you will build bunk beds, out houses and shelters as well as other tasks while learning and contributing to the Oglala Lakota Indians on the Pine Ridge Resercvation. For more information on RE-Member, visit: 


Learn about the challenges faced by Native Americans through untold history and present day issues.

Colorado Springs, Colorado

March    1-8

Travel by van to Colorado Springs where floods have devastated local communities. The purpose of the trip is to help with the repair and clean-up from the major floods that impacted Colorado residents.

Learn how natural disasters affect communities and how volunteers have helped families in these communities rebuild.

McKee, Kentucky

March    1-8

Travel by van to the Christian Appalachian Project site for this FAITH BASED TRIP. While there you will repair substandard housing and build new homes for low-income families in Eastern Kentucky as part of their annual WorkFest for college students. Discover first hand the issues facing the people of the Appalachian Mountains.

New Orleans, Louisiana



FRESHMAN ONLY TRIP! Travel by van to Camp Restore and work with several different projects throughout New Orleans. These projects help the citizens of New Orleans as they continue to rebuild and adapt to the changes and challenges of their city post Hurricane Katrina. Learn how even after 8 years of work, New Orleans is still not fully recovered and what that means for New Orleans natives.

Detroit, Michigan

March    1-8

Travel by van to Detroit for this FAITH BASED TRIP. Learn how a consortium of urban churches are seizing this opportunity to reinvent church in the city. This trip will include direct service opportunities as well as a thorough orientation to a city in transition. 

Increase your understanding of the challenges and opportunities in Detroit and other cities like it. 

Washington, Illinois

March    8-15

Travel by van to Washington, Illinois where you will help the residents rebuild their community after the devastating tornado leveled much of their hometown.

See first hand the devastating effects that tornadoes have on communities and the projects needed to get communities back on their feet.

Applications for Student Participants 

All current Valparaiso University students are encouraged to apply for a position on one of these alternative spring break trips. Applications will be available October 21st through December 4th. Please click here for the student application.
