Adjunct Faculty Resources: Reference
Reference FAQs
Here you can find the answers to some of the more common questions with regard to Reference Services in the Christopher Center. For information on Reference in general, please visit the Reference Department homepage.
What reference services are available?
You and your students can stop by or call the Reference desk at 464-6890 from 9am-midnight: Monday-Thursday, 9-5 on Fridays, noon-6 on Saturdays, and 1-5 and 6-midnight on Sundays. We also welcome appointments with librarians for more in-depth consultations. You can also email us questions by clicking on the "Ask Us" link located on every library webpage.
What databases do you subscribe to?
We subscribe to almost 100 databases. These include: WorldCat, Academic Search Premier, LexisNexis Academic, Expanded Academic (Infotrac), MLA, PsychInfo, JSTOR Arts and Sciences I, CINAHL, SciFinder Scholar, ATLAS Religion Index, and ABI Inform (business). To see a full listing of databases available, go to the library homepage and click on “Find Articles… in Databases”
Can I access these databases from off campus?
Yes, you can. Once you set up the proxy server on your home computer, you will be able to log in to library databases. Directions on setting up the proxy server are available at http://www.valpo.edu/eis/communication/ldap/prxysrvr.php (a link to this page is available at the top of all the database pages).
How can I find out which journals VU subscribes to?
We have access to approximately 19,000 journals. To see if we have access to a particular journal, go to the library homepage and click on “Find Articles.. By Journal or Magazine Title”. The majority of our journals are listed in this database called JournaLocator. If we have online access to a journal, it will list the journal title, along with the dates with full text available. If we have a journal in print or on microform, the link will read “Christopher Center Print Holdings”. If you click on the "journal" link, it will take you to the catalog record for that item.
If your journal is not listed in JournaLocator, check our catalog Galileo (galileo.valpo.edu ) for the title. Journals held at the law library are listed in Galileo, but not JournaLocator. There are also a few titles missing in JournaLocator that are available in Galileo, so it is important to check both places for journals.
