Servant Event Workshops

The goal of the servant event is to give participants the opportunity to serve God by serving others. This year's project will return the entire group to the Miller Beach area of Gary, Ind., where in conjunction with the Park Department and 1st District Councilwoman Marilyn Krusas, participants will do park clean-up and planting around the statue of Father Marquette. Bus transportation is provided by a professional bus company. Be sure to bring clothes and shoes suitable for outdoor work.

This is a park in the Miller Beach area. Notice Lake Michigan in the background. This is a beautiful section of the city. On a clear day, the skyline of Chicago is visible. The breeze coming in off the lake will be sure to keep workers cooled.

Each participant will be attending three workshops. Instead of pre-registration for workshops this year, participants will sign up for the workshops at the beginning of the retreat. All workshops will be a positive experience but spaces are limited so if there is one you really want to attend be sure to get to campus at the beginning of registration.

Everyone will have the opportunity to attend three workshops.

1. Stump the Pastor- Have a question about the Bible, Christian faith, or his favorite t.v. show? Keynote speaker, Rev. John Nunes invites you to bring your hard questions. Nothing is off limits!

2. Relationships-the Four Loves- . Come uncover the meaning of the Four Loves in this workshop being led by Rev. Joseph Cunningham, pastor and dean of the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University.

3. Cults- Rev. Amy C. Schifrin returns once again to the retreat to share with participants how to identify destructive religious cults and the techniques by which they seduce people into their membership.

4. Media in the Culture- TBA

5. Image- T.V., magazines, and movies infect our world with images of the "ideal" type - what we should look like, how we should cut our hair, and what we should wear. Yet, what if we don't fit that model? Does that mean there's something wrong with us? Hardly! Throw out your magazines and explore the image that matters: your true, accepted image granted by God.

6. Journaling- Discover the joy of putting your thoughts down on paper. Do you like writing on lines, or in spirals on a blank piece of paper? Does a certain Bible passage or song continuously repeat itself in your head? Find out in this workshop how journaling can help you see what God has done and is doing in your life. Let your creative juices flow.

7. Jonah But Jonah is more than just another "fish story." The four-chapter book packs a powerful punch for God's people today. This discussion will address forgiveness, mission and God's call on your life. But beyond that, participants will learn practical truths relating to the complexities of twenty-first century living. So come on a journey with Dr. Reed Lessing, learn the lessons of a lifetime and through it all meet again our marvelous Savior who says, "One greater than Jonah is here" (Matthew 12:41)

8. Exploring the Diversity of God's Kingdom- Agape In this workshop we will examine our differences and challenge our stereotypes in the hope of seeing each other through the eyes of God.
