TOBACCO-FREE POLICY IN COMMUNICATION CHANNELS

The following policy statement is recommended for inclusion in brochures, letters, and other correspondence.  It is intentionally simple and short.  It is recommended that offices elaborate on these statements when appropriate and in accordance with the Tobacco-Free Talking Points outlined below.

POLICY STATEMENT
Valparaiso University is a tobacco-free environment.

TALKING POINTS

  • Valparaiso University is committed to the health and well-being of all of its employees and visitors.  We know that smoking, including the effects of second-hand smoke, is harmful to good health.
  • Effective April 1, 2007, the city of Valparaiso implemented a no-smoking law in any place of employment and public places (with few exceptions including bars), as well as near doors, windows, ventilation systems, etc.  It is our obligation to abide by this law.
  • Effective July 1, 2008, Valparaiso University implemented a policy prohibiting smoking and use of any tobacco products on campus.
  • Valparaiso University will implement new programs to aid its employees in adopting healthier lifestyles.  Among them will be smoking cessation classes and other wellness programs.
