The mathematical sciences - mathematics, statistics, and computer science - are sometimes considered a “human endeavor” in which people create mathematical structures to investigate. Other times, they are considered a “science” containing theorems and ideas that people discover, much the same way that we investigate the world around us. And still at other times, the mathematical sciences are simply considered a “tool” for getting some task completed.
The Department hosts an NSF funded REU program in mathematics and provides many opportunities for academic year research by its majors. These opportunities give our majors a chance to experience the real world of mathematical or computer science research:
Talented high school students frequently look for opportunities to extend and to enrich their learning experiences. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has responded to this need by offering two courses developed especially for motivated high school students.

The department has seven scholarships, prizes, and awards available for students. Keeping with the department's philosophy of the central integrative role of the mathematical and computing sciences, these scholarships, prizes, and awards are available for a variety of students, can be obtained in a variety of ways, and recognize achievement in multiple areas.
Computer Science and Mathematics majors at Valparaiso University have a wide variety of interests. Besides studying for this major, they have second majors and minors that they study and they are involved in many different campus organizations. The following 'snapshots' of some of our current majors give a sense of the breadth of their interests.
The Computer Science curriculum at Valparaiso University employs the methodologies of mathematics (logic), science (observation), and engineering (design).
