April 2009 Awards

by Jerry Wagenblast
On a beautiful Spring evening last April members and spouses of the department were joined by a goodly number of students for the annual conferring of awards and scholarships.  Our venue in the new Harre Student Union was the Brown and Gold Room, which afforded us some striking views of the VU campus.

We always consider the public recognition of our special students to be a significant acknowledgement of their achievements and an affirmation of our efforts on their behalf.

Recipients of awards bearing the names of faculty members or their children were as follows: Adam Shull won both the Martin David Mundt Scholarship and the Howard K. Hughes Memorial Prize.  Joshua Zuellig was the recipient of the Kermit H. Carlson Memorial Scholarship.  The Arthur E. Hallerberg Memorial Scholarship was given to Joy Helfen.  Kelly Roth received the Louis A. Foster Scholarship.

Thanks to the following loyal and generous alumni we were also able to confer awards bearing their names: The Harold “Slim” and Elizabeth Denig Endowment Scholarship was given to Angie Storer.  The Nancy Wehmeier Nagel and Robert B. Nagel Prize was claimed by Kimberly Haugen.

We congratulate these students and are confident that these young people will make valuable contributions to our society in both their professional and personal lives.

The festivities concluded with a fast-paced game of “Group Jeopardy”, artfully devised and ably administered by Professor Melissa “Alex T” Desjarlais.
