Mathematics Major
Mathematics lies at the core of many academic areas of study, a fact Valpo's department of mathematics takes very seriously. Students are encouraged to explore many different areas of study, and faculty will frequently engage them in conversations about the connections between mathematics and humanities, the sciences, the arts, the social sciences, and other professional programs. In this way, Valpo's mathematics faculty weave a solid analytical curriculum into a liberal arts education.
The curriculum, out-of-classroom activities, attentive faculty, and the complementary math major option, all demonstrate the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science's commitment to interdisciplinary learning.
The mathematics major, for either the Bachelor of Arts, or Bachelor of Science degrees consists of:
1. Core Courses
CS 157 Algorithms and Programming
MATH 131 Calculus I
MATH 132 Calculus II
MATH 199 Mathematics Colloquium I
MATH 264 Linear Algebra I
MATH 265 Linear Algebra II with Differential Equations
MATH 299 Mathematics Colloquium II
MATH 399 Mathematics Colloquium III
MATH 499 Mathematics Colloquium IV
2. One of
MATH 240 Statistical Analysis
MATH 253 Calculus III
3. Two of
MATH 421 Combinatorics I
MATH 451 Analysis I
MATH 461 Abstract Algebra I
4. One of
MATH 422 Combinatorics II
MATH 452 Analysis II
MATH 462 Abstract Algebra II
5. And 9 credits of electives numbered above 300.
The complimentary mathematics major, which can only be used as a second major, removes one course from group 3, and eliminates group 4.
