Several of the faculty in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science attended the Joint Mathematics Meeting in San Francisco in January. Lara Pudwell presented a short invited talk on "Pattern-Avoiding Colored Partitions". Shane Drew continued his participation in the activities of Project NExT, a national professional development program for new faculty. Melissa Desjarlais spent an entire day in committee work helping to construct this coming November’s edition of the AMC 8, a national mathematics exam for seventh and eighth grade students. Daniel Maxin gave a talk “Why do we need intervals for the First Derivative Test?" in a session on Using Computer Algebra Systems in the Calculus Sequence, organized by Bill Marion. Rick Gillman reported on the mathematics expected of meteorology majors as part of a panel on discussion mathematics and its partner disciplines.
