VERUM Renewed Funding for 2013-2015

Lara Pudwell, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science, and Zsuzsanna Szaniszlo, associate professor of mathematics and computer science were recently awarded a 3-year grant of $279,586 from the National Science Foundation.  The grant will fund the Valparaiso Experience in Research by Undergraduate Mathematicians (VERUM) program for summers 2013, 2014, and 2015.  VERUM provides an opportunity for 9 sophomore and junior college students from around the country to engage in a first research experience in mathematics during a 9-week program hosted at Valparaiso University.  Students will be mentored by VU mathematics faculty as they work on projects in statistics, mathematical finance, mathematical biology, and combinatorics.  Over the course of the summer, they will hone research and communication skills that help them prepare for graduate school in the mathematical sciences and future careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) disciplines.

(Rep. Visclosky's office also put out a blurb about it)
