Current Student Profiles

Computer Science and Mathematics majors at Valparaiso University have a wide variety of interests. Besides studying for this major, they have second majors and minors that they study and they are involved in many different campus organizations. The following 'snapshots' of some of our current majors give a sense of the breadth of their interests.

Ruyue (Julia) Yuan

Why did you choose to be a mathematics major?
After my freshman year being a civil engineering major, I realized my true passion lies in math because I am always drawn to the theoretical reasoning behind facts. Math has opened up a new world for me to see the beauty in numbers and logical reasoning. Doing math makes me smile.

What are your career plans after graduation?
I plan to pursue a higher degree in pure mathematics.

What extra-curricular activities do you participate in at Valpo?
I am a member of Christ College, Mortar Board--National College Seniors Honor Society, and University Symphony Orchestra.

Michelle Kleckner

Why did you choose to be a mathematics major?
I chose to be a math major because mathematical logic came easy to me, but at the same time, I felt that it challenged me to find patterns, to problem solve, and to think outside the box. I was additionally motivated to pursue math because I realized that it is vital to understanding the world around us.

What are your career plans after graduation?
I plan to attend graduate school for biostatistics. My graduate school experience will help shape the future direction of my career within the rewarding and growing field of biostatistics.

What extra-carricular activities do you participate in at Valpo?
I am a member of the Valpo Women's golf team, and I am in the Christ College honor's college.

Christine Warner

Why did you choose to be a computer science major?
Math has always been my strong suit and I particularly  like statistics. Actuarial science combines business with statistics for a more challenging field.

What are your career plans after graduation?
I plan to work for an insurance company and continue taking the series of exams required to obtain a fellowship.

What extra-carricular activities do you participate in at Valpo?
I am a member of Campus Crusade for Christ, VU Ballroom Dance Team, and Dance Ensemble.
