Brian Ferguson attended Northwestern University where he continued the studies that he had begun as an adolescent, with Warren Benfield. He went on to study with William Rhein and Lawrence Wolfe at the Boston Conservatory of Music. Ferguson gained acceptance to the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra in 1974. In 1978 he was elevated to Assistant Principal and in that same year he was appointed to Assistant Principal of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has on occasion been a substitute player with the Chicago Symphony since 1984. He has been involved in several recordings and national and international tours with the Chicago Symphony. He is also Principal Bass with the chamber ensemble, Concertante Di Chicago since 1994. He has maintained a private studio for 30 years and has also taught bass at DePaul University and Northern Illinois University.
