Should YOU be a LIBERAL ARTS MUSIC MAJOR in Performance at VALPARAISO UNIVERSITY?

VU offers a traditional liberal arts education with breadth in general education and depth in one or two major subjects. For students choosing the music major as the focus of a Bachelor of Arts degree program, we offer comprehensive preparation in musicianship, history, theory, repertoire, and performance skills.

The liberal arts music major is flexible enough to permit a double major or a minor in another subject. It is also flexible enough, with careful planning, to include a semester off-campus. Graduates of VU's liberal arts music program excel in graduate schools, as artists, teachers, and administrators in music-related fields, and as successful professionals in other fields, including law, theology, medicine, business, and psychology.

As a Liberal Arts Music major at VU, you will have opportunity to . . .

  • take full part in the life of the University's musical community.
  • gain skills through regular performance experiences in formal and informal settings on and off campus.
  • learn through courses, masterclasses, and workshops about the meanings, traditions, and expressive values of musical works, to enrich and develop your insights as a performer and listener.
  • integrate your musical understanding with learning in other disciplines.
  • develop your leadership abilities in creative activities, including chamber music, conducting, composing, improvising, arranging, and multi-arts collaborating.
  • combine your music major with a major in another subject, or elect an international or urban semester while still completing your degree requirements within four years.

The Liberal Arts Music Major (Bachelor of Arts) consists of 40 credit hours in music, and 84 credit hours in general education and electives. Valparaiso University is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
