Biography

Critically acclaimed mezzo-soprano Angela Young Smucker has been praised for her “show-stopping” voice by The St. Paul Pioneer Press, as well as her “touching simplicity and molten tone” by The Santa Fe New Mexican. Her performances in oratorio, concert, and stage works have taken her throughout the United States and Europe.

The 2010-2011 season’s highlights include two performances of Bach’s B-Minor Mass, first with the Chicago Chorale followed by a return appearance with the Bach Colleguium San Diego; a lecture recital collaboration with her husband, Peter CW Smucker, exploring the vocal works of Elliott Carter; a recital of Bach’s transcription of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater; and a concert including the first parts of Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Bach Institute at Valparaiso University.

Angela has dedicated much of her career to singing the works of Bach and has performed the Mass in B-Minor, Magnificat, St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion, and several cantatas. She has also performed Handel’s Messiah; Haydn’s Creation; Mendelssohn’s Elijah; Vivaldi’s Gloria; William Bolcom’s Song’s of Innocence and of Experience; and the U.S. premieres of Francis Grier’s The Passion of Jesus Christ and Siegfried Matthus’ Te Deum. She has appeared under the batons of renowned conductors Helmuth Rilling, Hermann Max, and Philip Brunelle; and has performed with orchestras such as the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra, Leipzig Baroque Orchestra, Bach Collegium San Diego, Louisville Bach Society, and the Bach Institute at Valparaiso University.

As a choral artist, Angela has also been a member of several professional choral ensembles including Conspirare, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Grant Park Music Festival Chorus, VocalEssence Ensemble Singers, Oregon Bach Festival Chorus, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, VOX 3 Vocal Collective, Heartland Chamber Chorale, and Festival Ensemble Stuttgart. Stage appearances have included Dorabella (Cosí fan tutte), Marcelina (Le nozze di Figaro), Queen of the Fairies (Iolanthe), Augusta (The Ballad of Baby Doe) and Zita (Gianni Schicchi).

Originally from Southern Illinois, Angela resides in Chicago and, in addition to performing, is an adjunct instructor of music at Valparaiso University. She holds degrees from Valparaiso University and the University of Minnesota.
