Charles Steck has been Trumpet Instructor at Valparaiso University since 1990. At VU, Mr. Steck teaches the Trumpet studio, and also coaches and conducts the Valparaiso University Trumpet Choir. An active music educator, he is also Assistant Director of Bands and Choirs at LaPorte High School, and Sanctuary Choir Director at Bethany Lutheran Church in LaPorte, Indiana.
Mr. Steck holds the degrees Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music from Valparaiso University. His trumpet instructors have included Charles Mann, Luther Didrikson, Tom Crown, and Greg Fudala. He is a member of the Indiana Bandmaster's Association, the Indiana Music Educator's Association, and the International Trumpet Guild, and the American Federation of Musicians. His active performance schedule includes regular appearances with the LaPorte County Symphony, the Elkhart County Symphony, the LaPorte Municipal Band, the St. Joseph (Michigan) Municipal Band, the Whiting Park Festival Orchestra, and the Tom Milo Big Band. Conductors he has worked under include Philip Bauman, Dennis Friesen-Carper, Robert Vodnoy, and Daniel Summerville.
Charles Steck was named “Michiana Outstanding Music Educator” by Quinlan and Fabish Music in July 2011. That month, he was also the featured soloist with the St. Joseph Municipal Band, performing Jerry Lackey’s Collage for Trumpet and Band, conducted by the composer.
