Emily Smith joined the Valparaiso University music department faculty in 2010. She holds both a bachelor's and master's degree in bassoon performance from Indiana University where she studied with Kim Walker, Andrew Barnes and Benjamin Coelho. Since graduating, she has performed with several orchestras including the Des Moines Symphony, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Northwest Indiana Symphony, South Bend Symphony and DuPage Opera Orchestra. She is curently a member of the Lafayette Symphony, LaPorte County Symphony and South Shore Orchestra. Ms. Smith is also a founding member of the Kaia Wind Quintet, which performs regularly throughout Chicago and Northwest Indiana.
Committed to music education, Ms. Smith has served as the Youth Orchestra Manager for the Northwest Indiana Symphony since 2006. She has also worked as the Symphony's Education Coordinator and Assistant Librarian. In addition to teaching at Valpo, Ms. Smith is the bassoon instructor at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago and St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer and also maintains an active teaching studio in Lafayette and throughout Northwest Indiana. She is originally from Santa Rosa, Cal.
