Biography

YU-LIEN THE joined the adjunct faculty of Valparaiso University in the fall of 2007. In addition, she is a resident artist in the School of Music at Western Michigan University, where she teaches applied piano and accompanying, and serves as a staff accompanist. Born in the Netherlands, Ms. The received most of her musical training in Germany where she obtained degrees in piano and recorder pedagogy as well as in piano and recorder performance from the Hochschule für Musikund Theater Hannover. Other degrees include a Master of Music from Western Michigan University and the Konzertexamen (Artist Diploma) from the Hochschule für Musik Detmold (Germany). Her principal piano teachers were Arie Vardi,  Lori Sims, and Anatol Ugorski.

Ms. The has performed throughout Europe, Southeast-Asia and the US including appearances as a soloist with the NordwestdeutschePhilharmonie, the  Kammerorchester Hannover and the Baroque Orchestra L'Arco.  In1996, Ms. The was named a prize winner at the 12th International Piano Competition Viotti-Valsesia in Italy. In 1998, she was admitted to the National Concert Podium for Young Artists, a prestigious recognition for collaborative pianists,which led to several concert tours with violinist Tomo Keller. In 2006, Ms. The joined the critically acclaimed new music ensemble Opus21, winner of the 2006 Chamber Music America/ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award.
