Valparaiso University Announces Selection of 2015 CAPS Fellows

The Institute for Leadership and Service at Valparaiso University has named 20 Valpo students and recent graduates CAPS Fellows for summer 2015.

Recipients are selected from a competitive pool of applicants and will complete internships with organizations dedicated to service and leadership for eight to 10 weeks during the summer. The CAPS Fellows Program helps Valpo students develop their sense of Calling And Purpose in Society through intensive experiential-learning opportunities accompanied by significant reflection.

The 2015 CAPS Fellows:

  • Hannah Albers ’16, an international business and global service double major, Emily Knippenberg ’16, a nursing major, and Tommy Morrison ’16, a political science major, will serve with National Lutheran Communities and Services in the Washington, D.C., metro area.
  • Lars Anderson ’16, a civil engineering major, will serve with Water to Thrive in Austin, Texas.
  • Katie Bernabei ’16, a history and Latin double major, will serve with Concordia Place in Chicago.
  • Cogan Blackmon ’16, a theology major, will serve with the Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants in Chicago.
  • Faith Briggs ’17, a business management major, and Mychal Brim ’16, an English major, will serve with EMPOWER Porter County in Northwest Indiana.
  • Makenna Cannon ’15, an English major, will serve with Federation of State Humanities Councils in the Washington, D.C., metro area.
  • Kelli Chavez ’15, a sociology and criminology double major, and Graciela Payan ’16, a nursing major, will serve with Urban League of Northwest Indiana in Northwest Indiana.
  • McKenzie Cobban ’15, an international economics and cultural affairs and French double major, will serve with World Food Program USA in the Washington, D.C., metro area.
  • Jonathan Haggis ’15, a healthcare leadership major, will serve with Wittenberg Village in Northwest Indiana.
  • Nathan Hynek ’16, a sociology major, will serve with United Way of LaPorte County in Northwest Indiana.
  • Miranda Joebgen ’16, a theology and global service double major, will serve with Lutheran Services in America in the Washington, D.C., metro area.
  • Jesus Payan ’15, a biology major, will serve with the League of United Latin American Citizens Chicago.
  • Rocio Pulido ’15, a political science and Latin American studies double major, will serve with the League of United Latin American Citizens in Aurora, Ill.
  • Anna Scudiero ’16, a political science major, will serve with Horton’s Kids in the Washington, D.C., metro area.
  • Scott Staal ’16, a business management major, will serve with Legacy Foundation in Northwest Indiana.
  • Alex Uryga ’15, a political science and history double major, will serve with Venn Strategies in the Washington, D.C., metro area.
